Interesting to hear that SEO will not give you ROI. The continuously changing map analogy is good and gives a feel for what is happening.

However, I would view SEO more like a Public Relations Campaign. Not every press release the PR company sends out will be picked up, but some will if done correctly. Now is that a black art? And is it worth spending money on?

Not every marketing campaign you design will yield pre-defined results, so is marketing a black art? Or is it worth spending money on it?

Even advertising is a black art, isn't it? Definitely not a science. Most Ad agency types consider themselves creative and artistic.
